Quantum networks

How switches distribute entanglement, and how to design a network of them.

Quantum networks distribute entanglement between distant users for secure communication, distributed sensing and distributed quantum computing. Because every entanglement attempt succeeds with a probability that decays with distance, the network relies on switches and repeaters that swap entanglement to connect users without a direct link. The threads below cover how a single switch should be operated and how a whole network should be designed.

Quantum switches

Throughput-optimal control and rate-fidelity tradeoffs in reconfigurable entanglement switches.

A quantum switch receives requests for end-to-end entanglement while probabilistic link-level generation produces Bell pairs with its neighbors. Those pairs sit in scarce, noisy memories and must be consumed by swaps before decoherence destroys them. A flexible switch is reconfigurable, with optical switching in front of its memories and sources, so incoming and outgoing entanglement can be redirected and memories and sources reallocated across links as demand shifts.

This thread builds analytical models of that process and control policies for it: throughput-optimal policies for reallocating memories and sources under fidelity constraints, what the throughput and fidelity regions of a switch look like, and how all-photonic and memory-equipped architectures trade rate against fidelity.

Network design and control

Where to place sources and swap units on a fiber network, and how to operate them.

When entanglement sources and swapping devices are scarce, where they sit on the fiber network and how they are operated decide how much traffic the network can carry. This thread builds a capacity-driven framework that treats placement and operation together: a deployment fixes where sources and swap units go and which site pairs each source can serve, and an operating policy decides, slot by slot, which end-to-end pairs to build.

It also includes a short tutorial on quantum network control written for a networking audience.
